European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mariann Fischer Boel, reaffirmed the European Union's dedication to biofuels at the Biofuels Markets Congress in Brussels on 13 March. She emphasised that biofuels were a significant part of the EU's renewable energies policy and 'an important weapon in the fight against climate change'.

Greener ships and waterborne transport are vital components for reaching the 2020 CO2 emission target and giving Europe an additional competitive edge. This was the general consensus among industry representatives, researchers and policy-makers on 28 February in Brussels, where the European Commission hosted the 'European research for clean waterborne transport event'.

A demonstration against the growing influence of Islam in Europe, which is planned for 11 September in Brussels, is now being dealt with by the Belgian High Court. After the mayor of Brussels had banned the demonstration earlier this month, the German organisation Pax Europa filed suit in order to get the ban lifted. A decision is expected this week.

EU states and human rights groups are concerned about a massive increase in executions in Iran. 177 people were killed last year, an up of 70 percent on the year before. Executions were up sharply this year as well, and the Iranian leadership has started to kill people in public in a move that some believe is intended to intimidate opponents.
